6 BEST Day trips from Thessaloniki, Greece – my itinerary

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city of Greece and in my opinion a great city for a European city trip! The city has a lot of culture, history and beauty. The main things to do in Thessaloniki are shopping, sightseeing, exploring the Greece cuisine and the bustling nightlife of the city. During my trip to this city, I did some day trips from Thessaloniki as well and will tell you which Thessaloniki sights I can recommend to add to your Thessaloniki itinerary.

Amazing sights of Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki has a multicultural history, amazing churches, interesting museums, most of the time good weather and blue water of the Aegean Sea. I always love to visit a coastal city, it gives me a bit more of a feeling of freedom.

The centre of Thessaloniki is walkable, so you can experience a lot of sightseeing by foot. You will find other tourists in this city but it was not overcrowded, which I really like! The vibe in the city was relaxed, especially when you walk along the promenade.

If you are staying more days in Thessaloniki there a so many amazing things to do around Thessaloniki as well. That’s why I made a list of my favourite day trips from Thessaloniki with the best sights to add to your Thessaloniki itinerary!

6 Day trips from Thessaloniki – Itinerary

1. Relax at the beautiful clearwater beach at Halkidiki

When you think of Greece you think about beautiful beaches right? Well.. I do! Halkidiki is one of the tourist hotspots during the summer and makes it one of the best day trips from Thessaloniki.

You will find beautiful white beaches, clear oceans and lots of bars and restaurants at the beach. The place is perfect to escape the city of Thessaloniki and to relax a day at the beach. You won’t regret adding this to your Thessaloniki itinerary.

My advice is to go to Kassandra which is the closest to Thessaloniki. There are more people, shops, restaurants and the buses drive more often to this place.

How to get there?

It’s easy to go to Halkidiki from Thessaloniki by public transport. The KTEL buses run from Thessaloniki to several towns at Halkidiki: Athos, Sithonia and Kassandra.

It’s also possible to take a taxi, this ride will take around 65 minutes and costs between €90 – €120.

2. Visit the natural thermal baths in Pozar and the waterfalls at Edessa

Pozar
A visit to the thermal natural baths in Pozar was one of my favourite things during my trip. The thermal baths are nestled in the wooded surrounds and it’s a perfect place to relax and cool off during summertime.
Tip: visit the surrounding village with local markets selling local goods.

Edessa
Just 30 minutes drive from Pozar you will find the most incredible waterfalls and views in Edessa. The waterfalls are amazing and you are able to walk underneath them to experience the power of it! Tip: Explore the countryside as well!

How to get there?

It is easy to visit Edessa via train or bus. Every 2 hours there will depart a train from Thessaloniki. The waterfalls are very close to the centre of Edessa, so you can reach them on foot from the Edessa train/bus station.

Pozar is a bit harder to reach by public transport. To make it a bit easier for you to combine Pozar and Edessa, my advise is to book a tour. This takes some of the logistics out of your hands.

3. Go off the beaten path and visit the Kerkini Lake

Do you like to travel a bit of the beaten path? 1,5 hours drive from Thessaloniki you will find the Kerkini Lake. The lake is known as one of the best birdwatching destinations of Europe but in my eyes so much more than that and one of the amazing Thessaloniki sights you don’t want to miss.

For justs 10 euro you can take the boat and go the middle of the lake in order to get up close with pelicans, storks and other birds.

How to get there?

From Thessaloniki, it’s possible to take the bus to the lake, but it’s not the easiest way. It’s better to take a taxi or to drive your own car.

If you take the bus, get on the bus to Serres and then on the local bus to Lithotopos. From there you will have to take a local taxi to go around the lake.

4. Enjoy the stunning landscape of Meteora

This is one of my favourite day trips from Thessaloniki! Just a couple of hours drive from Thessaloniki you will find Meteora. Meteora is a mountainous region and has a stunning landscape and with one of the most impressive and beautiful monasteries in the country.

Wear appropriate clothes to go inside the monasteries because they are still home to many monks and nuns.

Tip: Visit the city of Kalambaka as well!

How to get there?

It is easy to reach Meteora by public transport, just take the bus from Thessaloniki to Kalambaka.

5. Explore Pella and Vergina

Pella
Just 45 minutes drive from Thessaloniki you will find Pella. Pella is the birthplace of Alexander the Great. At this place you can learn about the history, see the beautiful mosaics and explore this archaeological site by making a stop at the museum where you can find thousands of impressive finds from the sites.

Vergina
50 minutes drive from Pella, you will find Vergina. It’s a small place but what is held at this place is anything but small. This site is an archaeological goldmine. You can explore the remains of the temple, theatre and the cluster of Macedonian tombs. On top of the tombs, you can find the museum which is one of the Thessaloniki sights I can recommend adding it to your Thessaloniki itinerary!

Tip: Visit the shops and restaurants at the village as well.

How to get there?

These places are hard to reach by public transport aside that a bus ticket just to Vergina alone costs around €40, it may be preferable to book a tour for €50, or drive with your own car.

6. Visit Dion and Mount Olympus

My last tip from my Thessaloniki itinerary is located at 1-hour drive from Thessaloniki. You will find the village Dion and Mount Olympus at this place, two amazing Thessaloniki sights you don’t want to miss. In Dion you find Archaeological Park Dion, which is the most important archaeological site at Mount Olympus in Greece.

At the Archaeological Park Dion you can explore the Greek and Roman ruins and the theatre which is recently renovated.

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain of Greece and home to the Gods of the Greek mythology. It’s a perfect place for climbers, hikers and people who love nature.

Tip: Do you have enough time? Go for a hike! But be prepared, to hike the Mount Olympus it will take 2 days!

How to get there?

To visit Mount Olympus from Thessaloniki you need to take the train or bus to Litochoro. This place is 6km from Olympus, from there you need to take a taxi. It’s not easy to get at Dion by public transport. A tour would be easier to visit this place.
